One of the most striking features of Kupang is its coastline. The city is located on the northern coast of Timor Island, offering stunning views of the sea, especially during the early morning and late afternoon when the light is soft and golden.
I spent several mornings at Pantai Moti, a quiet beach located just outside the city. Here, fishermen prepare their boats for the day’s catch, providing ample opportunities for candid photography. The fishermen’s routines, with their colorful boats and nets against the backdrop of a rising sun, are quintessentially Timorese and offer beautiful compositions for both portrait and landscape shots.
Another standout was Pantai Nunsui—a serene spot with crystal-clear water and minimal development. The area is perfect for seascapes, and the underwater life is equally photogenic if you bring along a waterproof camera. I used a drone to capture the stunning coastline from above, showcasing the deep blues of the water blending with the sandy shores.
